Federal Election Issues - Social and Ecological Justice Commission Update

As with the provincial election, concern with tariffs continues to be front and centre in the federal election that has now been called for April 28.  At the same time, commission members are keenly aware that other issues that affect quality of life need to also be urgently addressed.

GLI (Guaranteed Livable Income), affordable housing, environmental protections – all of these are critical to demonstrating that Canada is a country that values human dignity and the well-being of all its citizens as well as its eco-system.

Don’t miss an opportunity to engage political candidates in a discussion of what priority they will give to making Canada an inclusive, livable and environmentally sustainable country where all can live in dignity.

Affordable Housing

The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH), the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), Habitat for Humanity Canada, and the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) released on March 11, 2025, a joint statement about the current national housing crisis with accompanying proposals for creating affordable housing across Canada.

The overview can be found here: Housing Canada: A Sovereign Plan to Protect Canadians and Build a Resilient Housing System.

Dr. Jennifer Robson provided input on the potential mechanisms by which Canadian housing might be affected during the Trump Administration, and economist Armine Yalnizyan provided financing proposals.
