Madeline Johnston celebrated her 100th Birthday with friends from Richmond Hill on Saturday June 10th where she lives with her son and his family in Kirkfield. Twenty people travelled in style in a bus rented by her son, Gord. An acknowledgement was read at the party from Mayor West and Council.
Madeline lived in her home on Mill Street since 1963, when she moved back to be with her Dad after her mother died, and moved to her son’s the fall of 2021. Madeline tended her large flower and vegetable gardens till she moved, at 98 years of age!
She was very active at RHUC giving of her time and talents to the work of the UCW, making crafts for bazaars and sorting mounds of donations for rummage sales and cooking and baking; being part of the Banner Committee who made all our beautiful and meaningful banners; decorating the sanctuary for the liturgical seasons; supporting church events and fundraisers with her presence; planning funeral receptions for at least 25 years; and insisted on washing thousands of dishes, saying she was just the right height for our sinks!
Madeline is a happy, caring and giving woman of faith. We miss seeing her every week at worship and throughout the week, busy at the church and other community groups and events, but know she is very happy living the “resort” life on the water and being cared for by Gord and Heather. Oh, she loves being in their new above-ground pool!
Donna Smith.
