Richmond Hill as a Resilient and Low Carbon City - ·targets and rationale: https://www.richmondhill.ca/en/shared-content/resources/documents/Richmond-Hill-Community-Energy-and-Emissions-Plan.pdf
WHAT WE NEED TO DO in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050? Richmond Hill must take action on seven program areas that have the largest and most transformational effect on the city’s emissions.
PROGRAM AREA PROPORTION (%) OF COMMUNITY GREEN HOUSE GAS REDUCTIONS Transportation Transformation 40% •Majority of trips within the city are done by transit, walking, and cycling. •100% of new vehicle sales are EVs by 2040.
Efficient Buildings 30% •80% of buildings are retrofit for energy efficiency, and switch to electric heat pumps and electric water heating.
Smart, Renewable Energy 6% •Rooftop solar is incorporated on 50% of buildings by 2050. •50MW of ground-mount solar and 50MW of wind generated-energy are added to the grid by 2050.
Towards Zero Waste 9% •95% of organic waste is sent to an anaerobic digester.
Compact Community 5% •90% of new development occurs along Yonge Street, Highway 7, or selected infill areas.
Municipal Leadership 2% •All municipal buildings are zero-emissions. •The corporate fleet is electrified.
Natural Heritage 1% •Complete implementation of the Urban Forest Management Plan.
We have been in discussions with the City of Markham about a program called “HERO” (Home Energy Retrofit Orientation) offered by Humber College and Enbridge Gas. This program features webinars that basically involve an energy expert walking through the retrofit process. There are four sessions already planned with Markham for the fall, and we can invite Richmond Hill residents to join. In addition, they are planning for three Sealing Air Leaks (SEL) sessions in the fall – another great opportunity for educating Richmond Hill residents on home energy improvements.
